How to fix USB not working with Dell XPS and Windows XP Professional

October 29, 2003 2:31 PM

At work I'm using a Dell XPS. It came preinstalled with Windows XP Home Edition. I promptly installed over that Windows XP Professional Edition so I could have features like remote desktop access to my machine from home. What I did not know is that Dell's drivers don't automatically re-install the USB drivers correctly, so USB was not working.

After many reboots, bios tweaks, and chipset upgrades, I finally found the solution. (Dell's solution was to format the hard drive and reinstall Windows. Yeah right!)

  1. Press Windows Button & Pause/Break to go to the System Properties (or right click on My Computer and choose Properties, but the other way is more fun.)
  2. Choose Device Manager.
  3. Expand the Universal Serial Bus controllers section
  4. Right click and choose Properties of one that says something about PCI bridge (I forget the exact name and after you fix the problem, this item goes away. If you aren't sure, you try step 5 and 6 on all of the USB items in that list.)
  5. Click on the Driver Tab (it's kinda slow loading).
  6. If the driver information on top says "Not found" or "Not installed" then click Update Driver... and let it look for the driver itself (I didn't need the XP CD but that might be because I keep a copy of it on my hard drive just incase. You might need it, I don't know.)
  7. After it finds the driver, click Okay and USB should start working immediately - no reboots needed!
Finally, back to the world of USB!
Now only if they designed the plug so you knew which way it goes in. I can never figure out which side is the top.

Comments

You will need the cd if you dont have it on your hard drive. It doesnt even have to be the XP cd. For me it couldnt find the driver on the XP cd so I used my Win 98 cd.. Drivers installed and im a happy camper. Took Hell.. I mean Dell 3 weeks to tell me to reformat and reinstall windows.

thanks a lot, after i installed pro i battled for 3 hours trying to get my usb mouse to work, had to dig out my old mouse from my old computer, anyways, i have a dell dimension and it worked perfectly, again thanks

Fair play , was driving me mad. Did the exact same thing as you, upgraded from XP home to XP pro and lo and behold - no USB. Rang DEll to no avail and searched around until I found this.....the solution. Makes me appreciate the real power of the Internet.

Thank you. I have bought three mouse and returned them, I have calling Dell for 2 months and they have sent me another laptop, but nothing solved the problem. I just updated the driver (no cd required) and everything worked fine.

I tried your solution and it worked great. You save me from getting a headache. Thanx

hi

I tried this on my inspiron 5100 note book. unfortunately doesn't help me at all. it says the software ur trying to install did not pass windows logo testing. is there any othere way around

Worked on a Sony RZ221. Again machine was upgraded from XP Home to XP Pro. Thanks.

SOAB! Just worked with my hp pavilion zt3000! Sweet!

Thanks! Same thing went for me with my Dell laptop after upgrading to XP Pro on the Built in Wireless connection. You have to re-install the drivers again because XP Forgets it somehow. Amazing....

Thanks for the help! I was about to reformat and reinstall! Found unknown driver on "PCI to USB Host controller" on an abit IC7-G Max 3! Some kind of viruss ruined or damaged a drive in my RAID array and I had to repair windows, when I updated windows all my USB ports were not working!

The troubleshoot guide called : 'How to fix USB not working with Dell XPS and Windows XP Professional'

was spot on.

I had the same USB problem after installing windows update, but followed the guide step by step- it was preety easy and it worked. Whoever wrote the guide, you saved my life, no really.

Tried driver update on Dell Inspiron 5100 works great(just update all the icons under USB Controller in Device Mgr) . No XP CD needed. Pathetic Dell tech support jerked me around for about an hour and then told me that software support will cost another $50 for 90 days and $150 for a year......GREAT help...keep it up

Dude you rock, 2 hours on the phone with dell plus hours of trying to fix it myself, you saved me a re-install!

Thank you for this faq. Easy to read, and yeah, the dell guy told me to reformat my computer also. I am pretty sure that this home to pro USB problem applies to many dell systems, not just XPS. I have no idea how you figured this out, but good job!

Thanks I also upgraded to XP Pro and my usb mouse stopped working. after doing the reinstall, it worked!!!

Thank you Lord! Although i don't have a Dell i had the same upgrade problem and no usb as a result. Tried for hours including a reinstall (again) and nothing til i found your sweet love on the internet. My boss won't fire me afterall. Thanks a million!

Whew - I installed updates to my OS and had this happen but your solution worked like a charm - THANK YOU. Why do they have to make installing upgrades so painful

This happened to me too. Last night I figured I'd update my new Dell to XP Pro, and after I installed SP1 the USB mouse went bye bye. I can't wait to try this tonight when I get home. Thanks in advance for the 411.

Thanks alot. Same thing happend to me. I really appriciate you taking the time to post the howto.

When I do this, it says "An error occured during the installation of the device, The data is invalid" What else can I do?

Same story as all the above, just wanted to say thanks for posting this. You've saved me alot of agrivation.

Thanks, Years had passed since i saw the problem first time Thanks

Fantastic, been having this problem ever since i upgraded to Win XP Pro over a year ago, I had to refuse to install service pack 1 because it killed my USB Cable modem. Only realised this morning that it was actually all USB devices it kills, and I couldn't find anything on the microsoft site to do with it.

Brilliant - Upgraded from XP Home to XP Pro and Hey presto No USB. Followed above suggestions on re-installing driver and now USB has returned. Many thanks

You Rock!!! I just spent a couple of hours trying to figure this out. Now I think I might just make it to bed before 1AM.

Thanks!

Hey. Great job. I don't even have pro (i have home) and all of a sudden my usb stopped working..???? I tried your solution and it worked. Now, where's my old C16!

You know, it's people like you that make life bearable. I hope you realize how many souls you've helped!!! Like the others, bought new Dell, immed upgraded to XP Pro, included USB optical mouse takes a powder. After searching on the Internet and doing all the microsoft.com stuff, stumbled on this. Thanks so much....you are awesome. Only thing I can't figure out is how you figured it out....but who cares!!!!

SWEET ,

i had NO mouse, so i used the windows, tab, and ctrl keys to get to Device Manger. Told it to reinstall the driver (for PCI to USB controller, not bridge, in my case). Windows started to install the driver, then decided it didn't want to, but then all my USB conections (mouse, scanner, digital camera cradle) all woke up at the same time with happy beeps. Like Windows just neded to be ~reminded~ they were there. So now the USB mouse and everything esle is working again. Good tip!

Thanks, tried to use my Jump Drive, after Home-Pro upgrade and it did nothing. I put it in my work machine and it worked fine, it was the controller in my case as well on my hp Pavilion notebook.

U Rule

Something to note on this is that you need SP1 for XP installed for the fix to work.

THANKS A MILLON DUDE... I TRIED EVERYTHING FROM CHANGING THE MOTHER BOARD TO GET MY USB WORKING.

U ARE THE GUY

I spent a good two hours trying to figure out what I did wrong on a brand new IBM Think Centre. I thank you and my clients thank you! All hail Dylan!

Thanks for the help I spent along time trying to fix this, then I read this and had it fixed in a couple seconds.

you are a god send...thank you.. I did the update on the hub and it didn't change anything... went back and did it on the other items... (didn't say what yours said) and it woke up my mouse is alive.... thank god for touchpads... I used it until I found this site. thanks so much

Thank you so much.

I googled for "dell usb xp" and this was the first site I looked at. My usb mouse finally works again, very frustrating trying to move the mouse pointer with keyboard.

I still can't believe you have solved my problem so quickly.

Thanks again !!!!!

Thanks a million! Worked like a charm.

Just worked on my Sony desktop. Same damn thing, upgraded from xp to xp pro...no usb...followed your solutions...bingo....webcam came on! Pocket PC syncs, Smartphone syncs...got beeps and light flashes all around me!

THANK YOU!!!!

You, sir, are my hero. I had spent 3 to 4 hours trying to find what was wrong and you've probably saved me another day of waiting for a reply from the Microsoft tech support people.

Incidently, my computer is an Inspiron 5100, but the solution still worked.

Thanks a million!!! My USB ceased after installing the XP pro service packs. I heard this is a common problem. I didn't need the cd find the drivers. I'd like to think I would have figured it out myself because it was so simple, but thanks anyway. I can use my mouse now!!! YAHOO!!!

Go raibh maith agat (Thank you)

Wow! I totally wasn't expecting to find this help! I just typed in "USB not working" in google and this was first in the list.

Wow! :) Me happy now! I hate Dell. :) Never gonna buy one again.

I am eternally grateful for your information! I have had my USB's go out on my Dell Inspiron 5100 after installing the Microsoft Service Pack 3. Two in-house IT guys at work and 45 minutes on the phone with Dell tech support still left me with no answers. Thanks to your site, I fixed the problem myself in about 30 seconds!

Man, your advice was perfect, that was exactly the problem with it not recognizing my scanner...

YOU ROCK!!

I echo all of the above comments in regard to how grateful I am in regard to this fix

Thanks

Sorry i should have said that I have a Dell 9100 -the XPS Australian Equivalent. I had the same problem upgrading from XP home to XP pro. USB devices no longer worked. Reinstalled the driver as outlined above for the "Standard enhanced PCI to USB host controller" didn't need the XP disk. Works like a charm

Awesome, is the only word I can think of right now. I was planning to go back to XP home, coz I didn't want XP pro if the mouse was not working.

Thanks man.

While I was on hold with Dell I decided to check google. It brought me here and minutes later the problem was solved. Thanks a lot!

dude! it really worked out fine for me... cool!!! tnx!

Thanks. This worked for me also. Thought I was a happy camper after installing Sp1, until I restarted the computer and the mouse was GONE! The above guidelines helped me out in seconds.

Thanks dude, looks like you're on top of your game....looked all over the frekin internet and found ALL KINDS of suggestions to no avail. Your solution is so simple, and yet no one else tought of it. Keep it up!

Score another greatful reader. That did the trick

U Rock =)

Oh thank god. It has been about a year since USB worked right on ym 5100 Laptop. If i plugged a device in, and restarted it would work, but once unplugged ide have to restart again to use it. This makes my life sooo much easier :)

Thank you thank you...

Same problem for me on my brand new Inspiron 600m. At the first trial, in the middle of copying files, the notebook crashed to memory dump. It didn't crash at 2nd time and it worked after trying again to 'update driver'. For the 600m, the one I updated the driver is 'Intel(r) 82801DB/DBM USB 2.0 Ehanced Host Controller - 24CD'.

I found the entry for "Standard Enhanced PCI to USB Host Controller" in Device Manager and let windows XP (Pro) install the driver! Thanks a lot.

Thank you... I have a Dell 8200 Inspiron it worked fine on XP Pro install but my 5100 had this USB problem thanks for the support! Dell sucks at service.

well iv done this serveral times & I get the same goddam error "the data is invalid" iv tried the driver on my restore disk & iv also downloaded serveral drivers & i get the same thing every time.. i wish this would have worked....

Dylan Greene for president.

You saved us hours of trouble & strife with a Inspiron 5100. We didn't get any problems upgrading from XP Home to XP Pro when we first boughtt the machine, but it all went wrong when downloading the XP SP1 via Windows Update today, after installing this update the USB had all gone away. DELL support is pitiful, didn't even try it, went Googling first.

Thanks for posting this, it sorted us out in minutes. EXCELLENT.

Hi! I am from Dell Tech Support and I have a customer who did the same thing upgraded his Dell 4600 from XP Home to XP Pro and no USB devices worked. After researching on this issue and found your solution, it really worked. I already suggested reinstalling the OS but luckily I found your website, KUDOS for you!

Thanks and have a nice day!

USB not working after upgrade from Win XP to Win XP Pro.

Thank you so much!!! After two hours of re-installing drivers, updating my BIOS, etc., my USB devices finally starting working again.

For Sony notebooks, follow the instructions above. However, after you expand the USB tree click on VIA USB Enhanced Host Controller. Install the driver and bingo, USB is working again. Thanks again!!

Dylan is a computer God!!!!! My story is the same as all the rest. HP and Microsoft advice completely useless. But Dylan saved the day!

I echo a previous comment, this site and your input truly reflect the power of the net.

You get major karma points on this one!

It worked just fine all the steps were eazy to follow. you need to work for some support company, becouse you can never get any good help from the ppl they have..

Thanks Alot

Thanks - Worked just like you said. The Dell Rep had me doing all kinds of tricks/stunts and then finally asked me to reload the OS.

Wish Dell would read the hints on this page.

Thanks a million .. worked just as you said. Funny thing was I couldnt connect to the Internet as my modem works only with USB, and I needed the internet to find a solution ... finally found this article at a friends place .. and wolla, I am fine now :)

Thank you so much. It fixed my USB mouse, but also the built-in Bluetooth card on my Dell Inspirion since it appearently sits on the USB bus.

thanks for help, i had same problem usb not working after installing windows xp service pack 1a.

Thanks! My USB stopped after upgrading from XP to XP Professional.

Your process fixed my non-working USB ports.

My Dell DIM2400 with XP Pro Version 2002 Service Pack 1 devices were:

Inter(r) 82801DB/DBM USB 2.0 Enhanced Host Controller - 24CD

Inter(r) 82801DB/DBM USB Universal Host Controller - 24C2

etc. Worked great. Just updated the drivers with the install the software automatically (recommended) option of the update driver section. No reboot required. No CD required.

Thanks!

Fixed my HP zt3010us laptop with that one too!

The HP boards were NO help.

God Send!! This tip should be sent to Microsoft!!!.. no it really should!!! This fix is not included in any of the troubleshooting software. I spent 30 hours in troubleshooting programs, restoring systems, messing with files, and searching on dell.. and microsoft.. help sites. This fix solved the problem in 3 min.

Thanks sooooooooooooo much! Yup, after going through the usual web searches I finally found your tip that made it work. And I KNEW I couldn't call Dell to give me any real solution. Thanks much!

Thanks SO MUCH for the tip!

You saved me hours of frustration....

Dell changed my mother board (inspiron 5100), nothing helped. Later found this, worked like a charm.

However, I did not have Pci bridge thing, therefore, I have updated drivers for all of the items under the usb.

Thanks.

Thanks for this. I knew the machine was ok, when I went onto the Diags partition and ran some tests. I even did a parallel install of XP. I should have checked this out, but thanks for this solution. Dell as still looking into this for me.

Your solution worked great! I was surprised it was sooo easy.

Brilliant, These forums are sooo much better than dell etc's own tech support

My new Dell Dimension 4600 got the same problem and it was solved by your method immediately. Thank you very much!!!

hp pavillion xp home to pro no USB

same probelem - same fix

thanks for info

Just add me to the list. My only regret is that I didn't find your site sooner. 10 hours of frustration, 2 of which were with incompetent Dell techies.

New XPS arrived today- installed XP Pro upgrade no USA> Dell tech support says I need to buy an OEM copy for 181 pounds of them to change OS. Crap!! Installed and NO USB. Google, your site, USB up and working. Thanks - saved me tiem and money.

You are my hero.

Almost returned by brand new Dell 600m, becasue of this problem. Thank you.

The USB worked fine with Home and fine after upgrading to Pro. But stopped wroking after SP1. Then I spent hours fighting this problem until I found this article.

Whoever wrote this, THANK YOU!

Your help was much appreciated. It solved my problem and everything is working fine. Thanks.

I have the same problem, only bad thing is my computer has no ps/2 keyboard slot (USB only). That leaves me kind of screwed as I can't do anything.

Dell Dimension. Same problem. Same solution required. :) Saved me a lot of heartache. Bless you for posting this on the Net.

Will you marry me?!

YOU ARE THE SEXIEST MAN ALIVE!!!

Dell Dimension 2400. Same problem, same solution. Thanks so much, although I won't offer to marry you like Maya since I'm not in Massachusetts.

Had identical problem. Dell with XP Home. Upgraded to Professional and installed SP1 on top of that. My thumb drive was not recognized (causing me a major problem on a project I was working on). Next, printer was not working. Both USB...searched Internet and found your solution. USB immediately started working!

The following message is from my son:Holy crackers you're such a saint! You also helped stop my dad from getting another one of his hissyfits.I'd like to see how long this page will be at the end of the year.

Thanks a million - just spent ages trying to sort this on 3 Dell Inspiron 9100's. Tried your suggestion - done in 1 minute!! Thanks again.

Thanks for posting your experiences with this problem. I had a similar problem (XP Home to XP Pro) with a Sony Vaio laptop and the above solution worked a treat.

Your advice worked like a charm on my Dell Inspiron i5150. thanx.

Thanks FRIEND!

HP laptop... usb stopped working on home to pro xp upgrade... after many hours of headaches... THANKS!

Being as I'm a Pastor, spent a bit of extra time thanking God for YOUR WISDOM and WILLINGNESS to SHARE!

you are the f-in man the solution worked. non of the other idiot sites intel, microsoft worked

As all the others said----THANKS! I was starting to think I'd have to try and dumb back down to XP Home.

Thanks alot, your solution worked perfectly. The IT guys at my school didnt even know what the hell was going on with my usb ports.

Excellent tip. I upgraded from Home SP 1 to XP and lost USB. I tried above and no help so I uninstalled all my PCI to USB devices and then did detect new hardware. It detected everything and life is good again.

Dude YOU ROCK!!! More thanks for you.

Dell techies' solution is too crazy - format c: and install 2000 or XP new might be Dell standard solution for all problems ever been, but they should give capable solutions to their customers.

The solution described is Microsoft standard, and a Dell techie (or trekkie?) should know.

By the way, I am too stupid for Dell support...

By the way, I am too stupid for Dell support...

You rock. Thanks for the great tip.

...by the way I used your advice on my Sony Vaio...XPPro...

Thanks a lot, it helped me solve my usb ports problem (pc clone - non-Dell). On my System it was name USb Host Controller and afterwards changed to SiS PCI to USB Enhanced Host Controller.

Thanks a lot. Worked perfect on my Dell 600m XP pro.

Worked for me as well. Mine was a little different. I went from XP Home to XP Pro and it worked fine. It was after upgrading my XP Pro to Service Pack #1 that it happened for me. Thanks for the tip.

Sorry guys, I have a similar problem, but this fix doesn't work. I'm typing this on an old style keyboard I borrowed from a mate to try and fix my pc 'cos neither usb mouse or keyboard are working.

If I try the above fix, it doesn't pickup on the devices...

"Cannot Continue the hardware update wizard"

as

"could not find a better match for your hardware than the software you currently have installed."

even though they don't work!

If I uninstall all the usbs, then let xp find them/install them again. they work. BUT, when I restart the computer again, they don't!

How frustated am I! Any ideas anyone?

Does not work for me either. Have uninstalled and reinstalled. USB worked for a while THEN I installed APC UPS Personal Edition Software which connects UPS and Computer thru USB on Computer. Other USB devices quit working. Removed [properly] PES. Restarted..no USB. Uninstall USB stuff...restarted...Windosw Server 2003 loaded USB drivers but USB devices do not work....no conflicts.....six drives! None work! What next? [NOT A DELL MACHINE}t

Thanks, Dylan. Fixed my f'ing brand new XPS right away.

You saved my life! I upgradede a friends laptop as a favour, and then thought I'd broken it!

FYI - you just need to delete all the USB stuff from the device manager and reboot to load the original drivers, which (strangely) then miraculously start to work. (HP Pavillion notebook zx5000 / zx5151EA)

You're the man, Dylan. Richie (#106) did your fix on my laptop and it works!

You rock!!

Thankyou very much. After consulting the best technical support money can buy at a major university, your solution worked in 5 seconds and put the whole techinical support system to shame.

Well Done.

I have an Inspiron 5100 that has also been giving me interminint USB failures. Also by going to those seperate USB hubs and going to properites, then Power, and unchecking the option that allows the PC to shut these down to save power is what worked for me!!!

i owe you my first born son

I go to device manager to find the usb, but not even that can be

found please help someone please.

Thank you.

Worked perfect.

Thanks man - I installed XP pro over home- on a sony vaio -was gonna do a bios flash - thank you for saving me a ton of time

one more thing in XP pro - if you don't have your cd - then uninstall the PCI to USB driver thing- right click on the main USB thing with the plus sign next to it and click scan for hardware changes - it should autodetect the USB's and install the drivers automatically

Done and done...thanks

Fixed my friends Inspiron 5100 in 2 minutes! Thanks much.

The was awsome my friend. I wasted around 4 to 5 hours with the untrained dell representatives. With ur advice it took me only 1 min.

God bless you!

thank u so much. been looking for a fix for a week

hay thanks worked here too was stumped could not seem to find another driver at all for some reason after i went to add one myself it let me go to add hardware wizard and all the usb controllers and root hubs i needed was there

Had the same issue on a Dell Dimension. None of the above instructions fixed it. But, when I installed XP Service Pack 2 the issue corrected itself.

Thank you so very much. I have gone a month unable to print or scan or anything else and you have saved my life. I spent 2 1/2 hours with Haboo from Dell and all he gave me was a headache. Thanks a million.

Anybody know what to do when the USB drivers are all there, everything is reported to be working fine, but still devices aren't being recognized?

I have a ups backup that's not being seen by the system via USB in addition to a palm sync cradle that's not being seen.

Thanks...

I've got the same problem with a Dell Dimension running XP Home. All 3 USB's drivers are there. Device Manager claims USB ports are working properly, but none of my USB hardware is being recognized (flash drive, camera, scanner, mouse).

All ports used to work.

I ran a few tests:

- the mouse light flashes once as I plug it in and then goes dead

- I rebooted with it plugged in and the mouse light flashed continuously but stopped as soon as Windows loaded

- if I reboot with a flash drive in, the computer locks up until I unplug the flash drive

- if I try to plug in any USB device while the computer is running, I get no response...doesn't even recognize something has been plugged in

I've got the problem too but there is no "PCI Bridge". There was, however, an "Intel 82801EB Enhanced Host Controller-24DD"

I tried updating the driver but it did not find a better one. I them tried rolling the driver back to the previous driver and it magically changed the device to the PCI to USB Bridge. When I tried to update the driver for this device it changed it back to the "Intel 82801EB Enhanced Host Controller-24DD"

Any ideas???

Thank you! Thank you! Thank you!

Had been struggling with this for many hours before finding your solution!

Thanks!

I"m not even going to read all of this message but i will say that when you install your own version of an os even if dell sells that os you are on your own and i have not problem with that. you should have ordered it with xp pro. as far as the usb problem, most likely it is because of the usb 2.0 driver which is on the resource cd sent with the computer. if the dell rep told you to reinstall os then he is he not really wrong since you installed your own os. dell doesn't support the system if it is not oob config.

oh and if anyone needs help with this issue...just ask

Thank you for posting this. Of course it helped me too. I will also try it with the audio drivers for the port replicator. Thank you again.

Great atricle...Works spot on!!

Thansk

Sorry, what you said did not work on my dell inspiron 5100.

I am trying something else.

Nice one guy!!!

You ROCK! Thanks for putting this up. I've had non-working USB ports on my Dell Dimension for 3 months after I upgraded to xp pro. This took about 30 seconds. No CD necessary. Cheers!

you ROCK! Thanks!

When I tried this all of the usb contollers worked except one, and it says the drivers are not installed, and when i tried to install them from a winxp disk, it said they were not found

I had a similar problem with my girlfriend's Inspiron 5100...there were 2 usb controllers listed in device settings, 1 with bad drivers. After installing service pack 2, problem solved itself.

Hey, thanks alot. I owe you a cyber beer!

I can't believe that so many people would need such simple information about finding new drivers for the usb. Well, I am one of them. I am so blessed that you put up this fix for the usb problem on my dell. You saved me hours. Thank you

Works great. I chose update driver and get it from Internet Windows Update.

thanks man.

In answer to your question about which way to plugin a USB device. The USB "logo" on the cable goes up. :-)

hi

I tried this on my PentiumIV with ASRock 775i65GV Mother Board but unfortunately doesn't help me at all. it says the software ur trying to install did not pass windows logo testing and my web it's not working. is there any othere way around. Please help me

YOU ARE THE MAN!!!

worked on my toshiba satellite

Thanks.

Brilliant, First class fix. I repaired xp and USB stopped. Thanks to you its running again, Tokk less than a minute.

My problem is with Inspiron 1150 running XP home. Tried to install the hotsync cradle for my PDA using a USB to Serial Converter cable (not Windows logo tested). I was assured by the StarTech guy that it would work fine. Ha Ha. It worked but then the computer would not recover from hibernate. After uninstalling the drivers that came with the cable, that problem was fixed. Found a USB cradle and got it working, finally. Today it was dead - no response. Now all the USB ports are dead. Tried the above solution - no good. It won't/can't find any drivers or says they are up to date. Can't get it to look on the internet for drivers. Afraid to uninstall the drivers. Help!

Nice tip...fixed my problem on USB 2.0 with no drivers installed.

Thanks.

Thks for the tip.

Something (virus, spyware, hyjack, who knows?) force me to run the XP repair option. My PC was updated with SP2, and the re-installation blowed the fixes away, so I start again installing SP1, but after that, the mouse stop working. Your tip was a great help.

At 12:30 pm, the IT guy upgraded my Toshiba Satellite A10 to XP Pro (on top of XP home). The USB mouse gone. After 5 hours of rebooting, upgrading, searching the microsoft database etc, I came across this solution. I spent 10 mins reading the comments and one minute to solve the problem. Thanks a lot, guy.

You DA Man!!

I have been trying to solve this for Ages! Same problem with Win 2K and Dell Latitude, I kept thinking it was an IRQ Conflict...

Thank you, Thank you, Thank you.

You saved another Dell owner! Dell should give you a job. Nice simple fix. Just the way I like them. Great Job. Thanks for the post!

Thank you - very much - for this. You've just saved me a day or so of faffing about backing up stuff and reinstalling.

Did not work for me after a fresh install of XP Pro on IBM Think Centre...I will still be hunting. Nice try though and it seems to have helped a lot of people.

Joe

Where can find the driver. My XP CD doesnt have it and it is not in my hard drive. HELP!!

The first time I tried to update the driver, windows crashed with a blue screen. But it worked fine on the second try and I can now use the USB ports.

BTW, this was on a Dell Inspiron 9100 which was upgraded from XP Home to XP Pro.

Thanks a lot!

this fixed what dell couldn't do without major hassle!!!

THANKS

you da man - took all of a minute to fix

A variation of this worked for me and I have an HP 9110 laptop. Same procedure but with some tweaks. Open up system properties -> Hardware ->Device Manager.

Expand Universal Serial Bus Controllers. And check out the properties of Standard enhanced PCI to USB Host Controller. This one will also not have its driver install. Install the driver and Voila! Back to normal. Thanks for showing me the way. HP technical support was worthless.

I using a built PC with XP Pro and lost all my USB devices when I updated to SP 1. Your solution worked like a charm. Thanks for the help :)

Thank you so much! I bought my Dell computer in May 2004. I've tried installing Windows XP Service Pack 2 twice now, and my USB ports always ceased to function. Well after finding this little article, I re-installed it, and then updated all the things listed under my USB ports tab, and they finally work. Can't believe something that's been bothering me for months now, was so easy to fix! I figured if I got XP S2 working, then MSN would always work again as well. And well, it does (although I figured that out the first time I installed it). Again, thank you very much! :D

Awesome, worked on IBM thinkcentre 8307-25U. Thanks!!!

Thank you very much.. I was trying to get rid of this problem whole last night and finally gave up.. When I searched on google, I found your resolution, it simple worked great!! Thank you very much once again..

I use a Dell Dimension 8300 desktop. Similar to many other posters' situations. Clean Install of winXP Home. Upgrade to winXP Pro. USB ports stopped working. Can't clean install on winXP Pro CD first b/c it lacks SP1 which was required to install USB 2.0 drivers (w/o this driver, I'd be stuck at USB 1.1 speeds). Ironically enough, the USB 2.0 driver installed after using winXP Home was worthless due to it being gone upon upgrading to winXP Pro. Not only do I have full USB use back, but it's also back to 2.0 speeds!

Thanks for the post. Would've never found this on Dell's online support database.

This works on my Inspiron 5100, but it's not a PCI bridge you have to update the driver for, it's the Intel Universal Host controllers that you have to update. Works like a charm. What a POS upgrade hassle.

Excellent post, and thank god for google! Easy to read and understand!

I installed XP Pro, and my usb 2.0 ports act like 1.1, so all my external harddrives transfer files very slowly. I was hoping this would work, but it didn't, and I have no idea what to do... I don't want to take all that time to format and install XP Home and then transfer everything back..

Awesome find, didn't have this problem until I upgraded my Pavilion zv5330ca to Windows XP Service pack 2.

Well, after I installed win xp pro, my dock station stoped working, I deleted the usb drivers from device manger and restarted windows but now windows can't find the right drivers, please advise what should I do?

THANK YOU!!  almost took Dell's advice.

Another varation...  I have re-installed Windows XP Home on a few Dell machines and in some instances, I am left with an unknown (yellow astericks) USB Universal Host Controller from Intel chipsets.  Windows XP installs the three or four unique UHC's that it can but there is no unique identifier for the last one.  That has forced me to try other devices.  In all cases they are system devices, not USB devices.  In one instance I believe it was a PCI to USB bridge or something along those lines and another time it was -- and get this -- a Compaq Deskpro Thermal Sensor.  I tried several other system devices and everytime they would install but show up with a problem (yellow astericks).  Out of sheer frustration, I chose the Compaq Deskpro Thermal Sensor and it took, even after a reboot.  Go figure...

Well done! I've had no disk drive or usb ports for months and now everything is working thanks to this solution.

Thanks a million Dude - Nice and clean fix.

Thanks for the fix on the usb. you are a life saver
