The Pin Clock!

September 16, 2004 12:02 PM

Years ago my parents got me one of those pin things that you can make hand imprints on. Being the engineering types, my friends and I have always tried to figure out a practical-yet-cool use for it, possibly as some sort of 3D display.

Well today I stumbled across a Korean company that sells a clock that uses a pins-based display.

Lots more pictures of the Pin Clock.

After some web searching, I found a company in the US that sells the Pin Clock 1 for $70.

The Pin Clock 1 "produces a satisfying click sound with every number change - similar to the sound of "flipping" seen at old-fashioned train station arrival and departure boards." The Pin Clock 2 is silent, and the only place I could find to buy it requires a minimum of 500. Anybody wanna go in on 500? :)

DOes it have some sort of illumination?

Count me in for 1! :) that thing is great. Just needs blue led lights for night time use.

does it glow in the dark, too? :)

I'm holdin' out for the "Pin Watch".

I'll go in for one too. Only 497 more and we're there.

BOUGHT IT - Does not glow. No illumination. Makes a satisfying set of clicks (like the old railroad train tables) as each of the pins shift for the new time. The click annoys most people in my office. Its cool, but not really that cool. Serves as inspiration to take over the world though.

JC Penney has it for 39.95

FYI: search for "Impression Time" in JC Penney

the Jc penny one is battery...www.chiasso.com has an ac one

JC Penney's is on closeout and in stock for 29.99. I would go in for one of the silent ones but need it in time for Christmas!

Be careful - this does not have "3000 metal pins" - they are plastic bumps molded into the face of the clock. The moving "pins" are also just molded plastic pieces. $30 or $40 is a high but OK price, do NOT pay $70 or $80 for this plastic clock!

I too was going to mention the "3000" pins. I estimate about 400 pins. But regardless, the important thing here is that this clock is so damn loud and annoying that it will make the perfect "passive aggressive" gift for somebody that you secretly dislike. It is annoying as all hell. Cool looking, but nobody in their right mind would want one due to the noise.

I own one.
After one day,
I'm Selling It.

The Pinclock would be AMAZING; *if*:
**...it was made with pins instead of chunks of plastic made to look like pintips.
**See that picture up there? See all the "pins" that AREN'T showing the time? Well, that's just one big sheet of bumpy plastic.
**...it wasn't SO DAMN LOUD!.  It would be great in a shop garage or airport terminal where it would never be heard.  A minor "click" during the day, but believe me, at 4am, it's enough to wake you up.

**The Pinclock reminds me of what would be presented to investors to give them an IDEA of what it WOULD look like, only better, if they fund it.

Too bad.  Sure looked cool.
