My car was broken into, XBOX, games, and laptop stolen.
November 25, 2004 6:28 AM
After a very nice evening hanging out with my brother and some friends in Baltimore, I parked next to my brother's place about two blocks from Camden Yards. We played some late night Halo 2. I went back to my car and found the following:
Back window broken. Not a good sign.
Everything was there... except a large duffel bag.
The duffel bag has been my standard travel bag ever since I received it as a Bar Mitzvah gift. It's been to Israel, Europe, California, and every business trip I go on. Usually I put my clothes in there.
Inside the duffel bag was my XBOX, 5 controllers, and a CD binder.
The XBOX was an original "launch day" XBOX with an factory-upgraded DVD drive to get rid of the pesky "dirty disk errors." On the hard drive where hundreds of hours of saved games, preferences, my XBOX Live account, and lots of music for games like Burnout 3.
In the CD binder where about 30 games, XBOX Live Beta discs (useless but collectable), and small collection of of XBOX Magazine demo discs.
Also in the bag was the special memory card XBOX Live beta testers received as a thank you, several DVDs I was hoping to watch with my family, and a XBOX Wifi Wireless Access Point so we could have some Halo 2 action at my parent's house after the Thanksgiving Turkey.
Also taken was a loaner laptop from work. Fortunately, it was an old standby machine with nothing important on it (I used it to remote desktop back to my real machine at work). Hopefully my company has insurance for the hardware.
The biggest disappointment is going to be in the morning when I have to face my other siblings, Jared and Stacey. They've been looking forward to some classic Halo 2 and DDR Ultramix 2 sibling rivalry all week long. I think they're going to be more disappointed than I am.
I'm glad nothing else was taken. The only damage to my car seems to be the broken glass. I won't be able to get that fixed until after Thanksgiving, and hopefuly that won't be too much trouble. I had my camera, clothes, and other stuff in the trunk, and thankfully none of that was touched. Next time everything will go in the trunk.

Sorry for your losses! What a bummer. I just wanted to say that the trunk is actually not a whole lot safer. I lost a beautiful Nikon camera by thinking it would be safe in the trunk. No such luck!

Mate, this sucks. Got a question for you about the dirty disk repair. I've been getting that message a lot. What's the solution? A new hard drive?

Hey Cameron - The dirty disc error (or is it dirty disk error) happens when the DVD drive has trouble reading the game disc. This can happen if the disc is dirty, the drive has dust in it, or if it's an older XBOX and the laser has become mis-aligned from vibrations or moving your XBOX.
The dirty disc error happened so often with my original XBOX that I sent it in for repairs and they installed a new DVD drive that fixed the problem and was faster than the original. There are web sites that show how to replace the drive yourself but you risk losing access to XBOX Live if you "hack" your XBOX.

Damn, that really sucks ass. Does your auto insurance cover theft?
It may not replace your specific game stats, but Gameshark will allow you to download 100% complete game saves. They're useless for all Tecmo games, but it'll relieve you from having to beat so-so games all over again.
If Nero can burn DVDs without the Xbox (and Live) detecting the copied disc I can burn my Halo 2 to get you back into action.

I took some photos but there's not much to see. A door missing a window and a back seat missing a duffel bag.

While insurance would probably cover the items they generally have at least a $500 deductable. Market value for an Xbox is $150 not and games roughly $50. Guess depending on how much you lost you may be able to get a little something back.

Note to everyone: if you visit me (dylan's bro who lives in the ghetto) in the future, try and drive an tank. This raises an interesting issue. Does anyone have one of those jeeps with the plastic windows? Is it possible to break into those with a sharp pair of scissors?

I was with Trev and Dyl that night, and I suspect that this was not a random theft. Somebody must have watched us park in that alley. They must have seen Dylan going through his bag looking for Halo 2. They knew that we would be playing Halo 2 for a couple of hours before anyone would come back and notice.
I just can't fathom that someone would randomly break into your car and nobody else's and only take the bag with thousands of dollars worth of electronics unless they knew to go for it. Also the copper that came was a major dickhead.http://www.DylanGreene.com

Damn.... Insurance isn't going to cover this one. My property insurance deductible is $2000. My estimate for the items stolen, besides the laptop which belonged to my company, is $1500.
They did cover the glass, and there wasn't a deductible for that.Posted November 30, 2004 12:16 PM
Wow that sucks, my car was broken into yesterday too. I didn't have quite that much stuff inside but all the "full-coverage" insurance is going to cover is the window. NOT the cd player, cds, camera, and dvds. It was the middle of the afternoon in the middle of downtown in a parking lot, sucks.

Bummer. Sorry to hear that mate. Car crime is a real pain in the butt... Had my car broken into a few weeks ago, and they took my CD changer, some CD's, sunglasses and some cash. Sounds like you got it a lot worse though. Btw, would be good to see the photos anyway :-)

My truck was broken into a few years ago. Busted out the back window and took the face plate to my cd player and an amplifier and cd's. They also tried to open my door lock with a screw driver. Insurance paid it all minus a deductable.

I had this happen last week, woke up and car was gone, they had the ability to make a key, or got a key somehow... and they only stole the car for the equip... wrote this after it happened...
now, some of u may have heard bout my car, some may not... but eithor way... my car is stolen...
AHHHH!!!....***!!!
so anyways... in the car was some equip.
http://www.gamertagpics.com/filesave/s/SU/p_SUPERSTINKcar.jpg
and this was all in there at tha time as well as the wireless XBOX adaptor with the config. DVD so I could get hotspots and play LIVE anywhere...
so seeing as the IDIOT that stole the car has my HALO XBOX and my WORKING SUPERSTINK account I was thinking that the MORON might be stupid enough to log onto my account and play on LIVE... because whoever stole the car was smart enough to be silent, and not break any windows, and get out of my garage port without being seen... also my MM3 XBOX Music mixer and NYCO AirFlow and halo controller and communicator were in there... total loss... like $500 plus random electronics and shoes, basketball and couple sterios and a damn nice kite and my video capture device AH... no more vids... and lots more... :(......
APB for SUPERSTINK for the next few days, unless I go to a friends and relocate the account onto my other XBOX or his... dunno

Sometimes homeowners insurance or renters insurance will cover items stolen from a car. I had a christmas gift stolen out of a car a couple years ago and my homeowners insurance covered my loss.
