New front page for each school. A feature I'm thinking about is allowing students to upload and share images. It would have the same public "moderation" system that the reviews have.

kewl stuff! so are you gonna have all the pics of all college on there? =P

I'm hoping students will upload photos and volunteers will approve them.

Cool..1 volunteer from each school to make sure they're actually pictures of the school?
Jason @ UMBC, posted 3/6/2004 10:30:00 PM
good way for photography students to work on their projects - I have already taken a lot of shots of my school that I could share.

GREAT IDEA! But what do you do about all the online universities? Maybe we could have a picture of a computer?

dylan. i know tat u object strongly to banners and pop ups. but dont u think the cost is gonna be a bid burden on u? i know everyone hates pop-ups, after reading a list of comments on popups in other online forums such as downloadanime.com, but i think u should put a poll up and ask who wants banners on the site. that way, u can make up ur mind more easily, not that i am saying u havent made up ur mind. but if u had an extra couple thousand bucks generating from this site (WHICH I THINK IS GONNA BE A MAJOR SUCCESS LIKE GOOGLE AND YAHOO AND FRIENSTER), i think it would go a LOOOOOOOOOOOONGER WAY! ciao and PLEASE GET THE SITE UP !!!
I NEED IT TO decide my scheduel for summer school! before june at least? thanks a lot man
seifer_li, posted 3/17/2004 11:48:00 PM
umm wat about the EXISTING users? can u create a database and let people sign up for their usernames and stuff in advance? so that SOME people do not have to come here once a week if not day to check if the website is up yet thanks?
and my email is jiaweideng1@hotmail.com thanks.
seifer_li, posted 3/18/2004 12:03:00 AM
I'd set something like that up but it will just push back how long until the actual site goes up.

Interesting example of Dr.Bearden from Univ of South Carolina. The only problem with his review is that fact that he has 250-300 students in his MKTG 350 class every spring and fall. I don't think the learning enivornment is good. It is not Dr.Bearden's fault it is the university's blame for having that many students in one class. Alot of students can't learn with that many people in the class. He would get good reviews only because most of the students in that class cheat and he doesn't know it.

hi! i was wondering if you could send me the reviews that you have on Prof. Balla, Prof. Rappaport, Prof. Thompson and Prof. Small all from San Francisco State University
RiCH, posted 4/13/2004 8:31:00 PM
I am currently taking prof. Thompson @ SFSU.... SHE IS REALLY hard and gives alot of work, but if you keep up with the work, you should be fine. HOWEVER, during the grading of the speeches, she is really critical and if you dont follow her instructions or practice it, you will recieve a really low grade. Just pay attention to every detail that she gives and you should be fine. One thing about the other teacher (small) is that she just doesn't seem to know what she is talkin about where as THOMPSON acutally does. And don't forget to laugh at THOMPSONS JOKES...despite the fact that they arent funny at all.

Hey Bill Chang...
You make too many assumptions.
Dylan spends WAY too many hours working on that site. BELIEVE me, I should know.

Teacher review went down as I knew it in Feb. The pay pal begging has been up now for months. Maybe it's time to stop with the "tr will be free" statement and just make paying a policy. I wish someone else owned or would buy this site. Changes happen at the speed of a slug.
Pay pal stinks and I'm too cheap anyhow., posted 9/1/2004 10:02:00 PM
I *never* said he didn't work on the site. I only said he is leaving it down intentionally to generate more "donations" (what other people call income). I don't accuse him of not working on the site, I accuse him of charging access for a supposedly free site under the guise of seeking donations.
Bill Chang, posted 9/7/2004 8:29:00 PM
By the way... kind of strange that he keeps deleting my comments, don't you think? Were my suspicions false, he would have no need to delete my posts.
Bill Chang, posted 9/7/2004 8:31:00 PM
bill chang,
did it not ever occur to you that he keeps deleting your posts because you're an asshole making untrue accusations... can't imagine why someone would delete that kind of from their OWN site.
Anonymous, posted 9/8/2004 10:58:00 AM
Bill - the donation is a buck - $1, a cut of which goes right to Paypal or Amazon. I'm not getting rich of $1 donations. It doesn't even cover the cost of running the site, which I've been running since 1999 out of my own pocket. I deleted your comments because they contained incorrect assumptions and I didn't want to cause further confusion. My contact information is available on this site - give me a call or IM and we can talk more.
Dylan, posted 9/8/2004 2:00:00 PM
Hey... sneaky... maybe you made up Bill Chang to generate donations out of frustration that some little weasel is degrading an effort of yours that clearly made a tremendous contribution to the educational experience of many people. It worked on me - I just donated $10, though I graduated long ago. I only wish this had been available then - maybe I wouldn't have ended up with an astrophysics prof who didn't believe in black holes in 1991.
Covington, posted 9/8/2004 8:09:00 PM
I think the longer the pay pal begging continues the worse this site will become. I've got three or four reviews posted on the site but I haven't posted maybe four or five because I'm waiting for it to be free again. I have to imagine there are many other people who won't even bother to post if this site ever becomes free again.

New Professor page. Professors will be able to update their information, add their own comments, and even put a photo of themselves up.
Dylan Greene, posted 3/4/2004 2:50:00 AM
I like this idea, but just out of curiosity, how are you going to prevent students from changing the photo of the prof? Without going into detail, how will you confirm the professor is real, and that it is truely a picture of them?
Cynthia C, posted 3/10/2004 9:49:00 PM
Only professors will be able to change their photo. Professors will confirm that they are real by making a donation to either TeacherReviews or a charitable foundation through TeacherReviews. The receipt from PayPal always has the real name. If the names match, the professor will be sent their password. If the names do not match, such as using a spouses PayPal account or their name is spelled wrong the web site, I will do my best to contact the professor in a timely manor to verify authenticity.
Dylan Greene, posted 3/11/2004 4:33:00 PM
i dont quite get the donation thing. if i was a prof, i have to pay to contribute to your site?...quite odd..
someone, posted 3/15/2004 3:34:00 AM
You don't have to donate to TeacherReviews, you can donate to a charity, but the purpose is to know that you are who you say you are. This is to prevent students from masquerading as professors since PayPal always uses your real name.
Dylan Greene, posted 3/15/2004 10:10:00 AM
If you want to use the plural of ALMA MATER it is ALMAE MATRES (not alma matas).
Anonymous, posted 3/16/2004 10:50:00 PM
Will comments be limited to only ratings between 1 and 10 and the appropriate canned response aligned with each numerical value? Will we have an opportunity to detail EXACTLY what the professor does right or does wrong (without defaming him/her)?
Anonymous, posted 3/17/2004 8:58:00 AM
Reviews include grades AND written text. The written text is required.
Dylan Greene, posted 3/17/2004 12:31:00 PM
Mr. Who? This feature I like because there is a look (supicious person) in the box to represent who is the teacher if without picture. I think it would be interesting to use this look. thanks
Belia, posted 3/18/2004 4:37:00 PM
Why can't you just have the teacher write to you from their school email address? That should be proof enough. Making them send money somewhere is kind of ridiculous.
yo, posted 4/2/2004 3:37:00 AM
Couple of notes (in general):
I am a faculty member at an institution that was formerly served by TeacherReviews.com (you recently received approx 11,000 reviews for faculty from this institution via the demise of professorevaluation.net - which shut down as the student who originally built it has graduated and moved on to bigger, better, and more profitable things.) I enjoy, encourage and READ the feedback posted by students. I encourage you to continue to fight tooth-and-nail against those who would shut down your site because their reviews are less than positive. (One might consider me to be biased as my reviews have been positive up to now, but let's set this aside for the time being...)

I recommend that you engage with the ACLU and any other organizations you can find to help support you in this endeavor.

That having been said, I'd like to address the comment regarding validation via email addresses. Unfortunatly for everyone, email addresses are "spoofable" - that is, I can write an email that appears to have come from someone other than me. (Using spam email as an example of spoofed return addresses, you might see how "have the prof email from his school" is not a foolproof method of validation.) I would recommend that contact information from the school website be used to provide contact information for that faculty member, and then a direct contact be made to that person to ensure the authenticity of the request. (Snail-mail validation is an option as well - addressed to the faculty member at their institution.)

Hope this helps and good luck fighting the good fight!

This site sounds excellent and I applaud your work and understand the complications it is going (or went) through. Unfortunately as you can see by the urgent sounding posts above...its time to register for classes many places so for the most part unless it comes up within a week or two...the site will be relatively useless for the next semester. Very informative for the winter quarter or semester as the case may be however. Awesome idea here. I had a similar idea for dog breeders and may very well work on it pending how successful this site becomes.
Anonymous, posted 4/29/2004 11:35:00 AM
I think that teachers should be denied access to this site. Sounds like they have already infiltrated the system posing as students. The credibility and usefulness of this site will be diminished if you allow teachers to object to comments just b/c they find them personally offensive. Don't forget who this site was originally made for. As one of your constituents, I think that you should preserve the feedback of student postings no matter how offensive. Pesonally, I don't care what comments a teacher has b/c that is not why I came to this website. I didn't come here to listen to a proffessor's sales pitch on why all the reviews are innaccurate. I came to hear what the students have to say. I really appreciate the time and effort you have put into this. It is truly an invaluable asset for me and thats why I don't want to see this website corrupted by bad teachers that don't like the reputations they have developed with their students. Basically, they are using you b/c you are the most effective medium through which they can defend themselves. Let them do it on their own time, money, and effort. I wouldn't worry about lawsuits b/c that would never pan out in court. I'm just worried about who this website will be serving after all of this is done.

Three reviews from the university page. Reviews are now treated more like blog entries, and every university automatically has blog built using the latest verified reviews. This makes it easy to see the newest reviews at your school.

Some new details on the review. You will now see the number of reviews that the reviewer has posted and the average grade that the person gave for those reviews. No more wondering if the person just gives A's or F's to everyone.

i'm a student and i must say i really hope all of these changes are going to also be better for the teacher as well. why? because i felt sorry for some of the teachers who had really stupid or mean-spirited things said about them. just because i'm a student doesn't mean i want to propogate disrespectful and adversarial comments about them for all the world wide to see. on the previous site i saw things like, "he's a bad teacher, and i'm sure he's gay," or "she's a bad teacher and getting really old," or much worse things which i won't repeat. i was shocked at some of the things that were passed off as "reviews." i would hate to be a teacher and have some hater kid post crap about me that every student in my class had read and which comes up on a google search of my name. yes, free speech and all that. but for god's sakes, a little respect. where would we be without teachers? please don't be mean to teachers!
la estudiante, posted 3/16/2004 7:34:00 PM
This is a really good idea! It will give you a fair and balanced picture of the reviewer. A dedicated student should objectively rate his/her professors so other students following can get a valid overall and unbiased view of the professor and not someone's leftover sour grapes. When reviewers are rated for their objectivity a clearer picture emerges.
Anonymous, posted 3/17/2004 9:41:00 AM
Hello Dylan. I'd like to start by commending you for maintaining teacherreviews.com. I've used the site for years and have found it helpful in charting my classes with great success. I've also referred the site to many of my peers. Because of the sensitive nature of reviews, I realize instructors may not always be happy with reviews about their performance. I've found the quality of a review tends to reflect on the reviewer, and those based on grudges are easy to identify from more qualified responses. Overall, I've had an excellent rapport with my instructors. I've provided both praise for excellence and constructive criticism for improvement. As a student, I view the instructor-student relationship similar to an employee-employer relationship. Based on the quality of performance, students can either hire and retain an instructor or dismiss those who don't work well for them. Because the power dynamic favors an instructor after a student hires her or him, I see this site as an opportunity for students to provide critical feedback to other students and instructors based on their experiences. I'm concerned about the potential for censorship from instructors who don't receive favorable ratings. Will the new edition, which looks beautiful by the way, permit the same openness for critique if instructors are permitted to pay for providing additional information about themselves? How would that work? Thank you for your time.
Michael Rouppet, City College of San Francisco, posted 3/25/2004 10:49:00 PM
Is there a way to make the final or total grade for the professor match up with the other grades. In the earlier edition, some people would give B's and C's for the sections (lectures, tests, and so forth) and then give a D or an F overall. It did not make sense other than to show they were mad.
anonymous, posted 4/16/2004 11:03:00 AM
i know this has been asked many many times, but.... is there an estimated time table of when the site will return? i have access to the reviews since i gave my donation, but i really would like to add some personal reviews and also see reviews that are a bit more updated. the site has been down quite awhile now and the reviews are getting older and older.
