CES 2005 Keynote with Bill Gates

Wednesday, January 5, 2005
The 2005 CES didn't have much new to show - just upgrades of things we've already seen, and what a better way to start off that kind of show than Bill Gates, showing off upgrades to Media Center.  We were hoping to see an XBOX 2 announcement, or at least a new version of the Windows Smartphone edition, but instead we got an un-cooperative Media Center remote, a development XBOX machine with a memory issue, and an over-rehearsed Conan O'Brien.

The first signs of CES - signs, and people on Segways! These people with the yellow coats and jumpsuits were everywhere to promote the Microsoft SPOT watches. They gave out 1000 SPOT watches each day, and I wouldn't be surpirsed if more SPOT watches were given out at CES than sold on all days leading up to it. I mean - who's the target audience? Anybody geeky enough to wear one is going to have a Smartphone or Pocket PC that's 10x more powerful, right?

Entry to CES is free, but you need to prove that you are "in the business" to get in. Since Chris, Dennis, and I were going just for the fun of it, we made our own business cards. I left one here at this menu so Dennis, who arrived on a later flight, could find it and meet up with us at the Bill Gates keynote. I texted him a short message describing where to find his business card - and it worked - he found it and got in.

We were waiting in line for a couple hours for the Bill Gates keynote. Here you can see the drinks start to stack up. We had been in Vegas for several days without drinking, and so we had to make up for lost time.

The line is probably a good half-mile long. Most people aren't able to get in. We were lucky - we waited at the bar and then jumped back in line when it started moving. Nobody questioned us because many people were doing it.

While most people were STANDING in line, we had nice seats and drinks! Sadly, this was the best part of the keynote.

We got in but not before they ran out of seats! Luckily we found a little hiding area. The bottled water thing became our bench.

Chris and I went to the Windows 2000 launch and they got Leno for that, but the CES could only get Conan O'Brien? I guess he's not that bad, I used to like him before Jon Stewart took over the Daily Show and totally ruled late night TV. Where was Jon Stewart? He would have made this so much more fun....

He doesn't look thrilled to be here... I don't blame him! His jokes were poor at best, and terrible at worse:
"Bill Gates is a family man... he has three kids... so I'm not sure where the name 'Microsoft' came from".... Oh boy... Going to be a long night...

Next bit... If Conan was to make a documentary about CES, who would he cast? He he shows an Emu for Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos. It would have been funnier if he picked people from companies at CES.

Okay, Bill is here. Sort of. Now we have the lamest rendition of Late Night ever... Bill Gates is in front of millions of people and instead of talking about what's new in the world, and where he thinks things are going, he has an overly-rehearsed interview with Conan. It was so akward that I would feel bad for both of them but they both have lots more money than me so I fiured this is *their* version of what a bad day is for us.

I've seen Bill talk a few times, and I've enjoyed dinner with him at his house twice, and so I know he's not a good public speaker and plus he's very shy in large crowds (which I used to my advantage both times when having dinner at his houses). So obviously he's no Steve Jobs.
But I can't get over just how bad he is in situations like this. He could be announcing the cure for caner and make it sound mundane or tedious.
He kept saying things like "more Media Center PC's have been sold in the last two months than the last two years" - that doesn't tell us anything. Exactly how many were sold? Why are people buying them? What are they using them for? What are you doing do make Media Center better? Give us numbers and facts, not generalizations and comparisons.

Conan asks for an easy-to-operate computer. He says something like "My computer still blinks "12:00am". Bill changes the subject to say why Conan needs a Media Center PC. I slap my forehead. Finally somebody is telling Bill computers need to be easier to use and he flatly ignores the statement.
