CES 2005 Keynote with Bill Gates

Wednesday, January 5, 2005
The 2005 CES didn't have much new to show - just upgrades of things we've already seen, and what a better way to start off that kind of show than Bill Gates, showing off upgrades to Media Center.  We were hoping to see an XBOX 2 announcement, or at least a new version of the Windows Smartphone edition, but instead we got an un-cooperative Media Center remote, a development XBOX machine with a memory issue, and an over-rehearsed Conan O'Brien.

Plays for sure... lamest ad campaign for sure. Does anybody every worry that their mp3's won't play on their player? In fact, the only thing that *won't* play on these devices is music from iTunes (Apple's ironic monopolistic decision in this case).

Yet another embarrassing moment - Conan has a Nikon camera that wirelessly transfers photos back to the Media Center PC. Conan must have never seen or used a digital camera before because he danced around Bill Gates like Steve Balmer acting like a monkey. Bill has apparently never posed for photos before, acting like it was the first time he's seen one of those new-fangled picture-taking devices.

After taking the photos, Bill tried to show the photo album on the Media Center PC in front of them. But it didn't respond. This was reported as Bill Gates getting the "Blue Screen of Death" during the CES, but it wasn't really a blue screen, and in fact the machine didn't even crash. It just wasn't responding to the remote, which was later discovered to be a hardware issue. Still, shame on the product crew for not testing and re-testing all of the equipment before the show to make sure snafu's like this wouldn't happen.

This was a cool demo: IPTV. They're showing how you can watch multiple games at once, but that wasn't the cool part.
The cool part was that when she changed the channel, there was NO DELAY. Normally with digital cable or satellite service, there is a brief pause when flipping channels. For ADD-ridden fellows like myself who can't stand to be on one channel for more than a heart beat, this makes me happy. I won't get digital cable or satellite service until I see that I can change channels without pausing.
I believe they do this using technology from the Windows Media player 9 codec, which can play videos without the normal "buffering" time associated with streaming video.

This was unexpected - a partnership with TiVo and Microsoft. Record it with TiVo and play it on a Pocket PC, Smartphone, or personal digitial player. This was one of the features I've always liked about Media Center, I'm glad to see TiVo will have it soon too.

Ahh.. XBOX, finally.... But what's this.... Forteza?
It's probably a damn cool game (think Gran Turismo 3 on steroids), but it's not my type. I much prefer the speed thrill and arcade simpleness of Burnout 3 over any kind of racing simulator.
That being said, I think it wasn't the type for a lot of people, because as a lead from the project was showing off the hundreds of ways to customize your car "with real parts you could go out and buy today" - his game crashed, and nobody seemed to care. That didn't stop him from pitting Bill Gates vs Conan O'Brien in a dual where Bill got a super car vs Conan with a old clunker with the NBC logo on it.
It didn't work out at all - neither knew the controls, and it was as much watching as competitive solitare. Nice try, next time pick a game that they could figure out in 10 seconds or less and would be fun for all of us to watch, and I promise you'll sell a lot of copies.
Seriously, we need more games that are easy to pick up and fun to watch!

I think that Microsoft needs to put allot more money into Bills appearances.

1. Fix the dudes hair so he doesn't look like a schmuck.

2. Fix the dudes clothes so he doesn't look like a nerdy schmuck.

3. Fix the hardware/software problems so he doesn't look like a schmuck.

4. Get better writers with better jokes....so Conan doesn't look like a schmuck.
