CES 2005 - Lesser-known companies with cool products

Thursday, January 6, 2005

There were several halls totaling to about 4 football fields worth of space full of Asian manufactures that I've never heard of. They probably make most of the products we use today, but stay behind the scenes as companies like Dell and Apple put their logo on items, mark the price up 200x, and sell it was a one-of-a-kind item.

Take a tour of some cool (and not-so-cool) items that sparked my interest. There's about 150 photos here, with lots of my own commentary. Feel free to add you own comments too.

You'd think these two Roomba clones would be fighting but they were just trying to escape to a booth where somebody cared more about them.

Another Roomba clone? Does this one play MP3's too? I wish!

BTW, that 55,074 is the booth number. Yes, there were more than 55,000 boths at CES, and yes I saw *every single one of them* - or at least I tried to. On the last day I managed to walk through every single major convention hall - it was over seven miles of walking!

I don't think this robot vacuums, mops, or makes coffee. But it plays a mean game of solitare!

I was more interested in what was on the TV than the TV itself. This guy is dribbling the ball on his amputated leg through the streets of Brazil.

This booth was advertising things made in Korea - but people were more excited about playing Dead or Alive on the XBOX.

I'm talking to this girl in Korea via the camera phone. I don't know she's saying because I don't speak Korean, and she doesn't know what I'm saying because it's too loud at the CES.

Those controllers look fairly similar to the Playstation 1 controllers... This booth was full of game system knock-offs that will soon to be in malls and Walmarts everywhere.

The sign says:

Apparently they didn't talk to me, because I do NOT want live TV on my cell phone!
Hell-freakin-no-way!
When I want up-to-date news, scores, or other information, I use Internet Explorer on my smartphone.
If I want video, I download the pre-recorded show with all the commercials already removed. Then I can pause and rewind it. So much better than yucky live TV.
I'm not sure why they think people want live TV on their cell phones. As if people want to waste their battery and minutes with commercial TV anyway.

Now you've seen everything - a Segway clone! For a fraction of the price, and a fraction of the coolness- you can have this *four*-wheeled scooter. Okay, so it has none of the cooless. So what's the point? Who knows...

Stainless steel flat-screen bezels! Awesome! This would go perfect in our kitchen if we could afford the stainless steel fridge and oven range!

Funny, how this reminds me of something I've seen before. Apples lawyers weren't at hand because Apple decided it was too cool to be at the CES with all the geeks and Vegas strippers, so they held their own show in Boston the week after CES.

A keyboard that's also a mini-locker! UGH.... Trust me, think of the stupidest idea ever, dumb it down, manufacture it for really cheap, and somebody will be interested.
