CES 2005 - Lesser-known companies with cool products

Thursday, January 6, 2005

There were several halls totaling to about 4 football fields worth of space full of Asian manufactures that I've never heard of. They probably make most of the products we use today, but stay behind the scenes as companies like Dell and Apple put their logo on items, mark the price up 200x, and sell it was a one-of-a-kind item.

Take a tour of some cool (and not-so-cool) items that sparked my interest. There's about 150 photos here, with lots of my own commentary. Feel free to add you own comments too.

The Creative Zen Micro - smaller than an iPod mini, longer battery life (24 hours vs 8), more color choices (9 vs 5), more features (recording, radio, Outlook sync), more music formats (mp3, wma, ogg vs acc), simular good user interface, cheaper.... But with a fraction of the marketing budget, I doubt we'll see the Zen Micro gain the popularity it deserves.

My phone is in the middle (the Audiovox 5600). To the left is some unknown phone, and to the right is the new Blackberry phone. The Blackberry phone is *huge*!

Alienware is usually known for their cool looking PC's. I was surprised by how simple the Alienware Media Center looked. Personally, I prefer the simple look, heck I could even do without the LCD panel and slot-loading DVD drive and still be happy.

Transmeta, makers of Intel Pentium clone chips that use very little power (but are slow), announced during CES that they would no longer be making chips, instead only making money from licensing their patents. Well at least upper management gets to keep their jobs. Transmeta made news when Linux creator Linus Torvald joined the company, but he left in 2003.
I saw the computer that the woman in the picture is holding. It was being shown in the Microsoft booth and was actually pretty cool being so small but still a full Windows XP machine. More about that in the other CES photo album (large companies).

Looking for an oriental hero? I'm not sure what this person in the booth is doing but I'm sure it has to do with becoming some sort of hero.

You can't tell from my crappy photography skills, but the case to this camera is made of wood. The booth where I'm standing, which is out of frame, makes wood cases for anything from cell phones to computers.

The new Robosapien has cameras in it's eyes and hands so it can track movement and follow your face. It can pick up items much better, stand up from falling down, has more motion, and moves faster.
