CES 2005 - Lesser-known companies with cool products
Thursday, January 6, 2005
There were several halls totaling to about 4 football fields worth of space full of Asian manufactures that I've never heard of. They probably make most of the products we use today, but stay behind the scenes as companies like Dell and Apple put their logo on items, mark the price up 200x, and sell it was a one-of-a-kind item.
Take a tour of some cool (and not-so-cool) items that sparked my interest. There's about 150 photos here, with lots of my own commentary. Feel free to add you own comments too.

A bluetooth keyboard with my phone next to it! I was actually thinking about buying this keyboard, but I didn't like it in person. The buttons were smaller than I'm used to, and the keyboard was kind of hard to open and close, and the power switch is REALLY small, you have to dig your fingernail to flip it on.

A seemingly stupid concept that played out really well: lenses for your cell phone. You stick a little magnetic ring on your cell phone around the camera lens, and then these lenses stick on via the magnet. The fish-eye lens and telephoto lenses worked great! I was really impressed! I don't think people will trust the concept (I sure didn't at first), but I'm sure there is a market for people who use their camera phones on a regular basis who would like more lens choices.

The Bluespoon - the smallest bluetooth headset I could find. So small I almost accidentally swallowed it!
I talked to the guy in charge and he said there was no "paging" feature. This means that if you drop it into a seat cushon, or into a pile of clothes, or do something else with it and you can't find it - well... there's no way to make it beep or anything to help you find it. The guy said that was a good idea, but I doubt I'll get any credit for it.

This was one of my *favorite* gadgets! Wireless remote control for padlocks! It uses a similar remote that to what your car has to open the lock. No more nightmares about forgetting your locker combination! This thing is awesome. Is it secure? Who cares... It's damn cool!
I wish I bought this from them on the spot. Maybe then I'd make it back to the gym!
