C&O Canal Bike Ride

Tuesday, June 7, 2005

Today Danny, Andy, and I went biking up the C&O Canal trail.  I took photos along the way.

About the canal:

The C&O Canal follows the route of the Potomac River for 184.5 miles from Washington, D.C. to Cumberland, MD.  The canal operated from 1828-1924 as a transportation route, primarily hauling coal from western Maryland to the port of Georgetown in Washington, D.C. Hundreds of original structures, including locks, lockhouses, and aqueducts, serve as reminders of the canal's role as a transportation system during the Canal Era.  In addition, the canal's towpath provides a nearly level, continuous trail through the spectacular scenery of the Potomac River Valley.  Every year millions of visitors come to hike or bike the C&O Canal in order to enjoy the natural, cultural, and recreational opportunities available.

I like shadow pictures. No worries about blinking, squinting, or generally looking bad. Just an outline and your imagination.

My legs need some sun but I'll risk the embarrassment because I thought this picture was kind of cool.

I took this while riding too. I wanted the trees in the foreground to look like they were zipping by, but the marsh in the background to be clear. Not easy to do with with my non-existent photography education. I still forget what F-stop means.

According to this thermometer, it's exactly 100 degrees fahrenheit. It's in the sun - the weather forecast was for 90. Most of the trail is in shade, so as long as we were moving it wasn't too bad.

This snack bar and bait shop is open till 5:00pm. We got there at 5:05! Ugh!

We were running low on water so we took advantage of a questionable-looking water fountain next to the building. I didn't run out of water until the end so I didn't try it. Danny said it was "alright", but I would think when you're out of water in 100 degree weather, *any* drinkable water becomes the most delicious elixir.

We're back!
The stat....
The 128 is my current heart rate - my average was 132.
The -5.8 is the speed, The minus means i'm going less than our average speed. Our average speed was 11 miles/hour.
Distance: 27.953 miles (can we just say 28 miles?)
Trip time: 2 hours 30 min of actual riding - it doesn't count our stops. We left at 2 and got back at 5:30.

Great

Great Pics!  I've biked through that area a lot.  Brings back a lot of memories for me - as I live in S. California presently.  I hope to be back East and riding on the towpath again soon.  Thanks again for sharing the pics!

I am a Cumberland native and as such I grew up near the canal. I wasn't quite walking distance, and when I was younger it was certaintly far enought that the mother would not have me riding the bike. Now that I'm older and out of the house though I enjoy spending time along the canal (both biking and walking). I enjoyed your pic's and thought every one might be interested in the page I just put up at http://www.wigfield.org/canal/ . These are pictures taken along the canal in the Cumberland area.
